Abstract
The area dedicated to the cultivation of kiwifruit in Spain in 1983 was 80 ha.
In the last four years the annual increase has been 160%. At present (June 1987) the total recorded area under cultivation is 597 ha.
Only 30% of this is in actual production with a harvest of approximately 3.500 Tm.

The principal areas of cultivation are Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria, Basque Country and Navarra in the north with 502 ha, and Catalonia in the north-east with 75 ha.
The average yield obtained varies between 18–20 Tm/ha.
The expected production for the year 1990 is around 16.000–18.000 Tm.
A T-bar support system is used with plantations frames from 5 x 4 to 4,5 x 4,5 metres.
The varieties grown are ‘Hayward’, ‘Tomuri’ and ‘Matua’ in the ratio of 1:5 and 1:6.
The main factors that determine the future expansion of kiwifruit in Spain are limiting factors of soil characteristics and climate, organisation of the production sector and the creation of the appropriate network of commercialization.
