Abstract
A survey on kiwifruit bud fertility carried out over several years in five growing areas in Italy showed that mixed buds are more fruitful the shorter the canes.
As the cane length increases, the percentage of flowering shoots declines and the last ones produce less fruit.
This happens in fruited canes or "laterals", that is the previous season’s shoots that bore fruit, whereas in unfruited canes or correctly called "canes" the highest fruitfulness is attained in medium length canes, 12-node long pruned, because of the presence in this kind of wood of 3 to 4 flatish leaf buds, that strongly lower the average bud fertility in short canes.
