Abstract
In-row spacing of 1.5, 3.0, 4.5, and 6.0 m with 4.5 m between the rows were compared in an experimental kiwifruit orchard at Cittadella, Padova (latitude 45 ° 38 ‘ North). One-year-old rooted cuttings of "Hayward" (female) and "Matua" (male) were grown at a 7:1 female to male ratio.
Vines at all spacings developed the canopy slowly and only by the 4th year numerous canes were available on the permanent cordons.
Moreover, the 3rd year bud fertility was very low (1.91 fruits/fruitful shoot) and increased only up to 2.71 fruits/fruitful shoot at the 5th year.
For these reasons poor crops were obtained the first three years after planting.
The 4th year, vines both at 1.5 and 3.0 m spacings produced 16 t/ha and the following season reached about 25 t/ha.
Vines at greater spacings bore an unsatisfactory number of canes per vine and consequently the yield per hectare was remarkably low in both years.
