Abstract
Experiments were carried out to define the best collecting dates of the propagation material and optimal IBA concentrations to improve rooting of the Hayward cuttings.

Cuttings were collected every 15 days from mid May to September.
On each date cuttings were dipped for 5 seconds in IBA solutions at 0, 500, 1000, 2000, 4000 and 6000 ppm and placed in a rooting bench for 45 days under continuous mist.

Rooting percentage, root number and length were measured.
On each date a cutting sample was taken and processed for endogenous carbohydrate and hormone contents.

Rooting was related both to collecting date and IBA concentration.
Highest rooting was obtained from cuttings collected in July-August and treated with 2000–4000 and 6000 ppm.
This period was characterized by a rapid cutting dry weight increase and by a decrease of growth promotors, inhibitors and carbohydrates.
