Abstract
The kiwifruit has achieved a secure place in the world horticultural economy without science developing a substantial understanding of its biology.
Further development will be dependent on a greater level of strategic and basic research.
Some recent studies highlight some of the unusual attributes of this plant and provide insights which are significant agronomically.
Issues of particular significance are, the positional and orientation responses which determine bud burst, shoot vigour and flowering, chilling requirements and models for release of dormancy and for flower initiation (vernalization like responses) and the peculiar anatomy of the root system.
Further research needs are indicated in root stock selection, training and plant improvement.
