EFFECTS OF GROWTH RETARDANTS ON VEGETATION AND FRUITING OF HAYWARD (ACTINIDIA DELICIOSA)

The possibility of controlling vegetative growth of cv.
Hayward with growth retardants was investigated for two years on five-year-old vines, T-bar trained.
The effects of the growth regulators on yield/vine and some fruit traits were also taken into consideration.
In 1985 paclobutrazol, SADH and cycocel were applied as foliar spray 10 days after bud burst at a concentration of 3000 ppm.
Paclobutrazol was also applied in 1986 as soil-drench at the beginning of February at three different concentrations (1,2 and 4 kg a.i./ha). As far as growth control is concerned, SADH and paclobutrazol caused moderate shoot growth control, while cycocel did not.
As far as fruiting is concerned, chemical sprays controlled flower bud abscission and showed a tendency to increase yield/vine.
Average fruit weight was instead generally slightly reduced by the treatments.
SADH caused a fruit length reduction by altering shape.
Soil-drench application of paclobutrazol, instead, showed an opposite tendency, causing a moderate increase in fruit length.
