Abstract
The first experimental kiwifruit orchards in Greece were planted in 1973, in the Katerini and Larissa districts.
In 1974 and 1975, the Pomology Institute in Naousa and the Institute for Subtropical Species based in Chania (Crete), both run by the Ministry of Agriculture, and the Agricultural Extension Service in Katerini set up experimental orchards, principally aiming to observe the bioagronomical behaviour of various cultivars in different pedoclimatic environments.
Further experimental orchards were later planted in other parts of Greece (Veria, Lamia, Volos, etc.). The cultivars tested were Abbot, Bruno, Hayward and Monty, in an 8:1 ratio with Tomuri and Matua as pollinators.
The plants were trained to Palmetta with 2–3 levels or to a T-bar, and planting distances were generally 3.5–4.0 m between rows and 7.0 m along the row.
