Abstract
There are more than 50 species of Actinidia grown in China.
Nearly all of them are grown in wild or semiwild state.
The species produced for fruits is Actinidia chinensis Planch., which includes three varieties: 1) var. chinensis, soft-hair kiwi; 2) var. hispida, stiff-hair kiwi and 3) var. setosa, setose-hair kiwi.
The main region of kiwi distribution in China is the central and lower Yang-tze River Valley.
It starts from the Huai-He and Qinling Range, corresponding to the 750 mm annual rainfall line, and extend southward to the annual mean temperature line of 20° and 22°C. The southwest limitation line is bounded by the 3000 meters above sea level.
New varieties have been selected and domesticated for larger fruits, higher yield and better quality.
