Past and Present Plant Growth Regulators No doubt the beginning of plant growth regulation began in England in 1880 when Charles and Francis Darwin noticed that coleoptiles curved toward the light.
These and many other observations led to the eventual discovery of the present known hormones: indole acetic acid (IAA), ethylene (C2H4), gibberellins (GA), cytokinins (CK) and abscisic acid (ABA).
