Abstract
The tops of shoots of chrysanthemum cv.
Indianapolis White were shaken manually, twice a day for 30 sec. at 08.00 and 18.00 hr during vegetative growth, microscopic flower bud development and macroscopic flower bud development.
Shaking inhibited stem elongation in each of those stages but the more effectively, the more advanced in development the plants were.
Shaking applied continuously during vegetative and reproductive development was the most effective: it reduced length of stem about 28.6%, length of internodes about 29.5% and delayed the flowering about 7 days.
The number of leaves and size of inflorescence was unaffected by mechanical stress.
