Abstract
The goal of most peach breeding programs is to combine desirable agronomic traits with improved fruit quality.
A number of simply inherited traits which affect fruit quality have been identified in peach.
It may be feasible to manipulate the major genes affecting these traits through gene transfer technologies, thus shortening the time necessary to develop desirable fruit genotypes.
To this end we are studying the expression of fruit-specific peach genes.
We have isolated cDNAs that are differentially expressed during peach fruit development and differentially expressed in low and high quality fruit.
We have developed systems for plant regeneration and Agrobacterium-mediated gene transfer in peach.
