POLYPLOIDISATION OF RHODODENDRON CULTIVARS IN VITRO AND HOW IT AFFECTS COLD HARDINESS

Abstract
Polyploid induction represents a useful tool for breeders as larger flowers, longer flowering period and deeper colors can be achieved through chromosome doubling.
Three Rhododendron clones were subjected to different polyploidisation procedures using colchicine and oryzalin in two concentrations either for 24 or 48 h.
The survival in oryzalin was lower than in colchicine solutions, but the percentage of true tetraploids obtained was higher.
More mixoploids than true tetraploids were obtained in all treatments.
The cold tolerance was studied of two diploid rhododendron cultivars and their tetraploid derivatives.
The leaves of the diploid clones attained better cold hardiness than those of the tetraploid clones.
