Abstract
Landraces, representing traditional varieties of vegetable crops, play a crucial role in maintaining agrobiodiversity, contributing significantly to both food security and ecosystem resilience.
In Armenia, the indigenous melon landraces stand out as a captivating element within the country’s plant genetic resources, possessing valuable agronomic traits that make them an essential material for crop breeding efforts.
This research delves into the exploration and characterization of three distinct Armenian melon landraces to identify key features that can be harnessed for crop improvement.
Utilizing the national descriptors for melon, a comprehensive characterization was undertaken to assess the unique traits inherent in these landraces.
The results obtained through this characterization process unveiled a spectrum of valuable characteristics that serve as a foundation for targeted melon breeding.
These traits are pivotal for the development of melon varieties that not only meet the demands of consumers but also address specific breeding goals, including enhanced sweetness, improved transportability, early ripening, small seed cavity, etc.
By shedding light on the distinctive traits of these melon landraces, this research aims to promote the utilization of indigenous varieties in breeding programs.
The findings offer valuable insights for breeders and researchers seeking to enhance the overall quality and marketability of melon crops.
