Considerations regarding the possibilities of exploiting the genetic diversity within the Vitaceae family

Abstract
This paper represents a review of research on the the main genera and species of the Vitaceae family and summarizes the results regarding their pharmacological or ith use in traditional medicine.
To update these data, several papers published have been reviewed.
Studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of various plant extracts (e.g., Leea rubra, Cissus elongata, Tetrastigma leucostaphylum) as anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antipyretic, or thrombolytic agents.
Additionally, bioactive compounds responsible for each effect have been identified.
This approach was observed in the majority of the reviewed studies (70.64%). 19.26% of the papers focus on the food industry (e.g., Ampelopsis grossedentata) to obtain alternatives to chemical preservatives, for winemaking (Cayratia trifolia), or to develop functional foods.
A percentage of 3.73% of the works demonstrate the potential of certain species (Cissus quadrangularis) in terms of developing new composite materials, colorants for the textile industry (Ampelocissus latifolia), or additives for drilling fluids (Cissus populnea). The remaining studies are important for botany and horticulture.
In conclusion, the majority of studies concentrate on the pharmacological potential of the studied species; others may be included in research programs to further explore their characteristics and broaden their interest in this topic.
