Abstract
Passion fruit (Passiflora edulis) is a worldwide known fruit with many uses in food products.
In Mediterranean countries with subtropical climate, like southern Greece, it can be cultivated as a species with low inputs.
Its propagation presents difficulties and is an obstacle to the availability of plant material.
In the present work, the possibilities of ex situ propagation from softwood cuttings were studied.
The object of the study was the recording of the growth parameters of the cuttings, which is carried out for the first time in the Greek climatic conditions.
The cuttings were taken in two phases, spring and autumn, the leaves except one pair were removed and immersed in liquid containing different concentrations of growth regulators (500-1000-3000-5000 mg L-1 IBA combining with 10 mg L-1 ΝΑΑ) and irrigation with vitamin solution (Thiamine 2.0 – Nicotinic acid 1.0 – Glycine 2.0 – Pyridoxine HCl 0.5 – Biotin 0.1 – Folic acid 0.5 – p-aminobenzoic acid 1.0 – Riboflavin 0.1 – Ca-pantothenate 0.5 mg L-1), for 5 s.
During the 1st spring establishment, the highest survival rate (70%) was observed in 500 IBA+vitamins treatment.
Shoot height and leaf number showed a significant difference in the 500 IBA treatment.
The highest bud number was recorded in the 5000 IBA treatment (6 buds). During fall establishment, shoot height showed a significant difference in the following treatments: (500 ΙΒΑ) (13.2 cm), (3000 ΙΒΑ), (500 ΙΒΑ+ΝΑΑ), (500 ΙΒΑ+ΝΑΑ+vit), (1000 ΙΒΑ+ΝΑΑ), (1000 ΙΒΑ+ΝΑΑ+vit) and (3000 ΙΒΑ+ΝΑΑ+vit). Leaf number was higher in 500 ΙΒΑ+ΝΑΑ treatment.
Bud number increased in (1000 ΙΒΑ+vit), (3000 ΙΒΑ), (3000 ΙΒΑ+vit), (5000 ΙΒΑ), (500 ΙΒΑ+ΝΑΑ), (500 ΙΒΑ+ΝΑΑ+vit), (1000 ΙΒΑ+ΝΑΑ), (1000 ΙΒΑ+ΝΑΑ+vit) and (3000 ΙΒΑ+ΝΑΑ+vit) treatments.
This study is the first work in Greece about passion fruit and provides useful information for its propagation, aiming at expanding the cultivation as an alternative crop, compatible with climate change.
