Abstract
Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum L.) as a leafy vegetable is not given much attention for improvement point of view.
A good amount of information is available on variability studies in fenugreek for seed purpose.
India being a center of genetic diversity for fenugreek provides maximum opportunity for improvement of leaf as well as seed yield.
These potentials are not exploited so far.
Therefore, local genotypes were collected and studied for genetic variability, heritability, genetic advance in fenugreek.
The genotypes of fenugreek under study showed existence of variability for various morphological characters such as plant growth characters, floral characters, biochemical characters, yield and yield attributes for mean performance and analysis of variance.
High heritability coupled with high genetic advance as per cent of mean was recorded by economical trait bunch weight (96.95%, 67.06, respectively) indicated that character may respond better to selection, hence selection breeding is most effective.
The phenotypic coefficient of variation was observed low (6.87), moderate (13.33-18.64) and high (20.65-32.08), and genotypic coefficient of variation witnessed low (5.42), moderate (13.02-18.86), high (20.65-32.08) variation among all accessions.
The fresh weight per plant had highly significant and positive correlation with growth and other yield contributing characters.
For yield improvement through selection the major emphasis could be given on the characters viz., number of leaves per plant, leaf length, leaf width, leaf area, plant height above ground level, number of branches per plant in fenugreek.
The genotypes ACKF-35, Phule Kasturi, ACKF-1, ACKF-14, ACKF-31, ACKF-19, ACKF-7 could be selected for the cultivation for developing high yielding variety leafy vegetable purpose whereas for seed purpose the genotypes ACKF-35, ACKF-16, ACKF-17, ACKF-20, ACKF-23, ACKF-24, ACKF-36 could be selected on the basis of their performance under study.
