Influence of ambient storage duration on melon seed viability and agronomic traits

Abstract
This study investigates the impact of seed storage duration on the germination rate, germination energy, and productivity of two melon cultivars, ‘Arpi’ and ‘Govakan’. The aim is to assess how seeds aged between 1 and 6 years perform in terms of germination and subsequent fruit yield.
Germination rate and energy were evaluated under both laboratory and field conditions.
In the laboratory, four replicates of 50 seeds per cultivar were germinated on moistened germitest paper at 25°C. In the field, seeds were sown manually in experimental plots of 20 m2. Plant yield was measured by the weight of harvested fruits.
The results showed that seeds aged 2 to 3 years exhibited significantly higher germination rates and energy compared to both fresh (1 year old) and older (4-6 years old) seeds.
These mid-aged seeds also had a positive impact on fruit yield, with ‘Arpi’ and ‘Govakan’ showing yield increases of 27.5-57.6 and 4.0-23.3%, respectively, compared to fresh seeds.
Mid-aged melon seeds (2-3 years old) provided superior germination and energy, leading to improved fruit yield and quality.
These findings underscore the importance of seed storage duration and offer practical insights for melon cultivation and seed management, particularly for small-scale farmers and seed enterprises.
