Abstract
Abiotic stresses are major factors that affect the growth, development, and productivity of crops.
The evaluation of the photosynthetic characteristics of the plants is important for the success rate of the introduction of the germplasm in the culture and, more importantly, in the breeding programs, in the context of increasingly pronounced climate changes.
This study aims to evaluate the behavior of PSII at high summer temperatures and predict the tolerance of senescent leaves to high temperatures.
To select grape genotypes with greater adaptability and trait performance, the experiment aims to evaluate and compare photosynthetic indices, and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters of 35 genotypes for wine grapes of which 25 are white, 4 for aromatic wines and 6 genotypes for red wines from the ampelographic collection located at NRDIBH Stefanesti, most of them considered to be on the path of genetic erosion and being autochthonous.
The results showed that the white genotypes showed a high Fv/Fm ratio, between 0.72 and 0.79, while in the red genotypes, it was below 0.68 except for the ‘Fetească neagră’ and ‘Băbească neagră’ genotypes.
The average values of ΦPSII (Fv/Fm), electron transport rate (ETR), and photochemical fluorescence quenching coefficient (qP) for the white genotypes ‘Alb rotund’, ‘Braghină albă’, ‘Cabasmă albă’, ‘Fetească albă’, ‘Galbenă uriasă’, ‘Galbenă măruntă’, ‘Om rău’, ‘Plăvaie’, ‘Zghihară rară’ varied between 0.68 and 0.72 and 0.38-0.42, respectively, being to higher than the other white genotypes.
The results of the analysis of the main components of the red genotypes showed that ‘Fetească neagră’ and ‘Băbească neagră’ provided the best results.
In general, the measurement of the photosynthetic characteristics of the plants during the growth period provided valuable data for the strategies of the introduction of the cultivars in the culture as for the introduction in the improvement programs, with good results regarding drought tolerance.
