Abstract
Pear breeding program started in 1967 at the Research Institute for Fruit Growing Pitești, Romania, has constantly, as a main objective, releasing of new cultivars with excellent fruit quality, nice appearance and shape of the fruits, early cropping, and resistance to fire blight and Psylla. A special aim of selection is also to develop cultivars with long storage capacity.
Annually breeding activity has consisted of 5 cross combinations made by conventional method, 2,000 blossom pollination, 1,500 seedlings obtaining, the first evaluation of 500 seedlings, and second evaluation of 10 selections.
The last registered cultivars, ‘Paramis’, ‘Paradox’, ‘Paradise’, ‘Isadora’, and ‘Pandora’, are described in this paper.
