Abstract
As a soil application of 5 or 20 kg ha-1 Paclobutrazol reduced the growth of Cambridge Favourite strawberries.
This effect could be partly reversed by a subsequent application of GA3. The maiden yield of Class 1 fruit was unaffected by the 5 kg application and reduced only 30% by the 20 kg application.
Both treatments reduced runner production and as a result, in a matted row system, reduced the density of crowns present after maiden cropping.
At both a normal (50 cm) and ribbon (15 cm) row spacing an application of paclobutrazol at 4 kg ha-1 had no effect on the initial yield per plant for C. Favourite, Hapil and Pantagruella.
In the ribbon but not the conventional planting it increased crown density.
Paclobutrazol appears to have a role in the regulation of vegetative growth.
This is needed for high density plantings to be practical.
