Abstract
Thirty cm long basal ‘Redhaven’ peach cuttings were taken monthly from October through January.
The cuttings were wounded at the base and treated with an 50% ethanolic solution of IBA (1 000 ppm) than stuck outdoors directly in the field soil.
The treatments were heated plots (around 5°C higher than the control) obtained by burying a underground heating cable 20 cm below the soil surface, and unheated plots.
Root emission was evident 25 days after insertion of cuttings in unheated plots on October 29 and cuttings in the heated plots inserted in October, November and December.
In both the heated and unheated plots cuttings propagated in November rooted and established with higher percentages than those inserted in December or January.
Cuttings rooted in heated plots that were actively growing were more severely injured by an unseasonably late spring freeze (0°, -1°,-3°C) in unheated plots.

Basal cuttings of ‘Jefferson’ peach taken on January 27 were treated with IBA as described and inserted in peat pots filled with 6 different substrates.
These were placed into bins with the media at the cutting base maintained at 21°C.
After 15 and 25 days the pots containing the cuttings were transplanted to the field.
Media had no significant the effect on cutting survival but significantly higher survival rates were observed on cuttings transplanted after 15 days of basal heating rather than 25 days.
