Abstract
The yield of some standard Italian apple, pear and plum cultivars varies from year to year and poor crops frequently occur.
One cause of this failure is inadequate fruit-set.
It may be provoked by such different processes as low pollination, poor pollen viability, slow pollen tube growth and/or short embryo sac longevity as a consequence of unfavourable environmental conditions and poor nutritional status of trees.
Some of these problems can be reduced by growth regulators or biostimulants which induce fruit-set and retention.
Previous trials have shown that Siapton can increase fruit-set of some apple and plum cultivars (Marcucci, 1984). In order to identify the mechanism involved in this action, in vitro and in vivo germination of the flower pollen of apple, pear and plum was studied after spraying.
