Abstract
A grass sward is commonly used as a ground cover in top fruit orchards.
Grass aids machinery movement but it must be mown to be effective, and to reduce crop competition.
This is costly and reduces the flexibility available for the use of labour.
Paclobutrazol, as a soil application, gives effective grass control which persists for over a year after the last of a number of annual applications.
The combination of paclobutrazol and mefluidide was particularly effective in a dry year although the size of the effect depended upon rate, timing and sequence.
