Abstract
Sprays of Putrescine-HC1 or L-Arginine-HC1 to olives either at full-bloom or at the beginning of petal-fall increased fruit set but did not affect fruitlet abscission.
In contrast, sprays of Cobalt Chloride did not increase fruit set but induced apparent parthenocarpy in 67% of fruits, with consequent reductions in fruit size.
All three substances decreased intercellular ethylene in inflorescences.

The uptake rate of 3H-(n)Putrescine into the inflorescences was greater than into the leaves and resulted in a limiting step being 21 times smaller than previously observed in apple.
