Abstract
Field application of paclobutrazol, flurprimidol and XE-1019 to Carya illinoensis (K. Koch) resulted with favorable modifications of vegetative growth.
All compounds exhibited high growth retardant activity and were equally effective at controlling undesirable vegetative growth while maintaining tree nut productivity and increasing nut quality.
A single application of any of the three chemicals suppresses growth for at least two growing seasons after application.
Excessive rates can greatly reduce leaf area and number of leaves per shoot.
A basal trunk drench appears to be the preferred method of application.
The potential of these regulators to the pecan industry appears to be promising and of most value for young trees (< 20 years old).
