Abstract
Sweet cherry is one of the important fruit trees in China, with high nutritional value, good economic benefits and good prospects.
Considering the wide range of cherry growing areas in China, the complex topography, and the large differences in climate and soil types, we need to select more dwarfing rootstocks which can adapt to local conditions. ‘Gisela 6’ is a triploid sterile hybrid, so it is difficult to further improve it by conventional hybridization.
To solve this problem, we successfully regenerate the hexaploid of ‘Gisela 6’ by chromosome doubling, which overcomes the sterility of ‘Gisela 6’. From the hexaploid progenies of ‘Gisela 6’, ‘Aijie’ a new polyploid dwarf sweet cherry rootstock with good dwarfing performance, early bearing and high yield, strong adaptability and high disease resistance were selected.
Its male parent is unknown and it is a natural hybrid.
Trees in the nursery are vigorous and have a spreading growth habit.
Bark reddish brown, rough. young branches green or purplish red, with short trichomes.
The leaf blade is elliptic, with 2-4 nectaries on base near the petiole.
Well-developed root system with many fibrous roots.
In Shandong Province in China, this rootstock germinates in middle March, blossoms in early April and the flowers last about 7 days.
The leaves fall in early October.
Vigor is better than that of ‘Gisela 6’. Trees grafted on ‘Aijie’ need regular and careful pruning to balance productivity and plant vigor.
High productivity can be maintained over many years with good orchard management.
It is suitable for cultivation in Shandong area.
