Abstract
This study developed and tested a high-density trellis training system for sweet cherry.
The key points of this system include: 1) the high-density cultivation of 2490 trees ha-1 was spaced as a wide-narrow rows pattern; 2) t high-density trellis training system was used, of which the fruiting branches were fixed horizontally on wires, and the canopy consists of a mix of spur and non-spur fruiting site, forming a double parallel 2-dimension fruiting wall of roughly 0.5 m for each narrow row in width; 3) using high-quality cultivars of ‘Brooks’, ‘Summit’ and ‘Tieton’ on rootstock ‘Gisela 5’. The trees began to bear fruit in 3 years after planting, and achieved full yield in 5 years.
The average yield was 6,876, 6,394 and 1,154 kg ha-1, respectively.
The average fruit weight of ‘Brooks’, ‘Summit’ and ‘Tieton’ was 10.15, 10.07 and 10.24 g, respectively, and the soluble solids content (SSC) was 24.3, 20.4 and 22.5 Brix, respectively.
Except for the variety ‘Tieton’, significant economic benefits can be highly expected.
The results indicated that the system has advantages such as high density, good ventilation and light penetration that result in improvement of fruit quality and high yield.
This system could be extended in similar sweet cherry producing areas in China.
