Abstract
The cultivation area of sweet cherries in the Republic of Korea was 1,026 ha in 2022, almost seven times higher than that in 2012 (150 ha). Sweet cherry imports increased significantly with the Free Trade Agreements in the 2010s, and the average import volume during 2020-2022 was 14,389 t year-1. Despite the increase in the cultivation area, more than 90% of the domestic sweet cherry consumption is imported.
Of the total import volume, more than 94% is from the US and Chile, which lead the summer and winter sweet cherry markets, respectively.
The sweet cherry breeding program of the National Institute of Horticultural and Herbal Science began in 2012 with the primary objectives of improving fruit quality, productivity, tolerance to rain-induced cracking, and self-compatibility and extending the harvest season.
Crosses were made either by emasculation or using cages enclosing whole trees, and caged trees without emasculation showed a high fruit set.
A total of 2,475 hybrid seedlings were obtained from 84 cross-combinations, and 51 superior individuals were grafted on the ‘Gisela 6’ rootstock for further evaluation.
Molecular markers of self-compatibility have also been used to increase breeding efficiency.
