Abstract
Sweet cherry (Prunus avium L.), is deeply loved by consumers for its delicious taste and rich nutrition.
In order to explore the occurrence rule of freezing injury in flower buds and fruits of sweet cherry, consecutive investigation was carried out from March to April for 24 years and the results were systematically analyzed combined with relevant meteorological data.
The results showed that extreme low temperature in winter or low temperature in early and middle March did not cause severe freezing injury to flower buds of sweet cherry in Taigu, Shanxi Province.
Yet, low temperature in late March or in April seriously affected on flower buds and young fruits.
When the temperature dropped to -4°C around the full flowering period, it could cause fatal freezing injury.
At the young fruit stage, it would cause severe freezing injury when the temperature dropped to -2.7°C. In summary, the degrees of freezing injury of flower buds varied among sweet cherry cultivars at the same low temperature.
For the same tree, the freezing injury of flower buds varied with heights and the severest freezing injury was on the bottom layer.
