Three molecular markers of fruit size in sweet cherry

Abstract
Fruit size is an important index to determine the commercial value of sweet cherry fruit.
In order to obtain fruit size molecular markers that can be used in breeding, this study was carried out.
First of all, through the QTL analysis of 18 fruit size related traits of ‘Wanhongzhu’ × ‘Lapins’ (W×L) population, 52 QTLs were gain and three fruit size molecular markers located at the QTL peak with the highest frequency and largest effectivity were obtained, namely Marker3427 (LG1), MarkerBFP801 (LG2), Marker2418 (LG6). Secondly, the selection efficiency of these molecular markers was tested by using the average single fruit weight (AFW) of 382 hybrids of W×L. The AFW of the three markers was 17.58% higher in large fruit genotype combinations (LGC) than that in small fruit genotype combinations (SGC) in three consecutive years, and the selection rate of LGC was 5.50%. Finally, the selection efficiency of Marker3427, MarkerBFP801 and Marker2418 was tested using the AFW of 10 years data in 120 different sweet cherry varieties out of W×L family.
Among 120 sweet cherry varieties, Marker3427 had three genotypes, namely C/C, G/C and G/G. The AFW of the Marker3427-G/G was 8.18% higher than that of the Marker3427-G/C. MarkerBFP801 had four genotypes, namely 152/159, 159/173, 165/173 and  173/173. The AFW of MarkerBFP801-173/173 was 20.96% higher than that of the MarkerBFP801-152/159. Marker2418 had three genotypes, C/C, T/C and T/T. The AFW of Marker 2418-T/C was 9.55% higher than that of Marker 2418-C/C. The speculated LGC of these three markers, MarkerBFP801-173/173 + Marker3427-G/G + Marker2418-T/C, were not found within the 120 varieties tested.
There were 23 genotype combinations, in which the mean aAFW of LGCs could be increased by  34.83% vs.
SGCs.
In short, this study obtained three fruit size molecular markers that can be applied in breeding, which can accelerate the breeding for large fruit sweet cherry.
