Abstract
Vigor reducing rootstocks are becoming widespread in the modern cherry production but there are difficulties in their application in several continental regions like Hungary due to their higher need for soil quality and sensitivity for water stress.
Three vigor reducing cherry rootstocks were examined regarding their effect on the water transport of the trees and the assimilation activity of the foliage.
Our assessments were carried out in the summer of 2022, in Elvira major in Érd, Hungary, on trees of ‘Regina’ and ‘Carmen’, standing on MaxMa 14, WeiGi 2 and GiSelA 6 rootstocks.
Trees were planted in autumn 2020, in a space of 4.5×1.75 m, in a wire trellis support system.
For our assessments, we selected 10 trees from each rootstock-scion combination, on which we determined parameters of growth (annual shoot growth, growth of central axis, trunk circumference), production parameters (number of spurs) and foliage area (average leaf area, number of leaves per shoots) were measured.
Knowing these parameters make it possible to compare the ratio of fruiting parts on different cultivars.
High ratio of flowers on young trees suggests earlier fruit set that is essential in making growing profitable.
The size and surface of canopy also determines the quality and amount of fruits.
According to our one-year results, growth characteristics of young trees show rootstock-dependent differences.
Greater shoot growth and vertical growth was observed on ‘Regina’ trees, ‘Regina’ on GiSelA 6 rootstock had the greatest shoot growth among rootstock-scion combinations.
Comparing the rootstocks, trees on MaxMa 14 had the highest number of spurs both in ‘Regina’ and ‘Carmen’, followed by GiSelA 6, while trees on WeiGi 2 produced the least.
Also, Regina/MaxMa 14 combination had the biggest number of shoots.
We assume that number of spurs greatly influence the assimilation area and the amount of fruits on the trees.
After the observation of flowering in spring we will be able to make conclusions about effect of the examined rootstocks on the fruiting wood development, precocity of ‘Regina’ and ‘Carmen’.
