Abstract
The Convention on Biological Diversity, of the 1992 adopted at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, obliges all signatory countries to collect, protect and sustainably use existing biodiversity.
Poland signed the document mentioned above.
The genetic resources of fruit plants belonging to the temperate climate zone are maintained in Poland by the National Institute of Horticultural Research, which is located in Skierniewice, in the central part of Poland.
Genotypes of fruit plants have been collected here for over 70 years.
The genetic resources of cherries, similarly to other fruit plants, are a rich source of genes determining the various biological characteristics of these species.
The possessed genetic resources allow for the preservation of the existing biodiversity for future generations, and are also widely used in creative breeding.
They also constitute a valuable experimental and educational base for students, advisers, gardeners – hobbyists and farmers.
Nowadays, this activity is financed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, intended for the financing of biological progress in plant production.
The genetic resources of cherries in Poland are gathered and kept in two separate field collections: collection of sweet cherry and collection of sour cherry.
At the end of 2022, there were gathered over 500 genotypes in both collections, including the 326 sweet cherry and 208 sour cherry genotypes.
A large part of the genotypes in the collection are local cultivars collected in the territory of Poland, during special scientific expeditions.
