Abstract
Plants often suffer from multiple environmental stresses simultaneously, and cherry roots are less adaptive in deciduous fruit trees in northern China.
To investigate strategies for managing concurrent stresses, this study conducted simulations of a high-salt environment, water-logging conditions, and a combination of salt and water-logging environments.
One-year-old seedlings of Cerasus sachalinensis were cultivated in each of these conditions.
The levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) and reactive oxygen species (ROS), as well as the activities of antioxidant enzymes and non-enzymatic antioxidants, were assessed at 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 days following the initiation of stress application to the roots.
The findings indicated that the levels of MDA, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), and superoxide anion (O2·‑) escalated with longer durations of stress.
During the initial phase of single and combined stresses, there was a notable increase in the levels of non-enzymatic antioxidants and the activities of catalase (CAT), guaiacol peroxidase (POD), and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) in the roots, as compared to the control.
The combined stresses of salt-water-logging intensified the production of ROS and increased the levels of MDA in the roots, thereby exacerbating membrane lipid peroxidation and significantly enhancing the activities of antioxidant enzymes.
The extension of the stress duration resulted in significant alterations to the antioxidant enzyme system.
In general, the concurrent stresses of salinity and water-logging resulted in more severe damage to the antioxidant system of cherry roots compared to individual stressors over a brief period.
It is important to focus on enhancing orchard site selection and cultivation planning in order to mitigate the risk of salt and water-logging damage during production.
