Abstract
Chlorophyll content varies under the influence of the genotypes, and rootstocks.
The aim of the research was to assess the effect of cultivar, rootstock and climate conditions on chlorophyll index in the context of vegetative growth and first yields for sweet cherries grown in Latvia.
The cultivars ‘Mindauge’ and ‘Spanische Kirsche’ on the rootstocks Prunus mahaleb, Gisela 5, Gisela 12, Gisela 13, and Gisela 17, and the cultivar ‘Paula’ on the rootstocks P. mahaleb, P7, and P. cerasus were investigated in 2017-2020. Chlorophyll index (CI) and growth/productivity parameters were measured: trunk circumference, the length of annual shoots, and yield efficiency.
Increasing CI during the most vegetation period with a decrease shortly before visible discoloration was a common trend for all cultivar-rootstock combinations.
The vigorous cultivar ‘Mindauge’ had direct and stable correlations (R=0.34 to R=0.62, p<0.05) between vegetative growth indices and CI, but the cultivars of medium vigor ‘Paula’ and ‘Spanische Kirsche’ – the inconsistent ones.
In prolonged wet weather conditions, CI remained stable for ‘Paula’ but decreased for ‘Mindauge’ grafted on Gisela 5 and Gisela 12, and for ‘Spanische Kirsche’ – on all rootstocks.
For both cultivars, the lowest CI was detected on the rootstock Gisela 12. CI of ‘Paula’ increased significantly under the influence of rootstock P. cerasus.
