Abstract
Sweet cherry is generally suitable for a cold and cool climate zone with an average annual temperature of 10-14°C, sufficient sunlight, and no severe cold in winter, and no extreme heat in summer.
Aiming at the low altitude warm-humid region in southwestern China with an average annual temperature of about 16.5°C, and even the similar climatic region in Southern China, the research on suitable cultivars of sweet cherry and supporting high-efficiency key cultivation technology was carried out.
From 2019 to 2022, the flowering and fruiting habits of five sweet cherry cultivars including ‘Rita’, ‘Isabella’, ‘New Star’, ‘Grace Star’, and ‘Rainier’ (excellent lines) were observed under natural conditions.
At the same time, the fruit appearance, quality, storability and economic yield were analyzed and evaluated.
By selecting excellent new cultivars with high self-flowering rate or high natural seed-setting rate, application of semi-dwarf excellent rootstocks (such as ‘Gisela 6’), poly-ridge cultivation, high light effect shaping and pruning, rain-proof and crack-proof fruit, efficient fertilizer and water management, and other key technical measures were applied.
The results showed that in Taixing Town, Xindu District, Chengdu (Sichuan Academy of Agricultural Sciences Modern Agricultural Science and Technology Innovation Demonstration Park) with an average annual temperature of 16.5°C, and the five tested sweet cherry cultivars were able to bloom and bear fruit in the third year.
In the 4th to 7th year, the yield continued to be high and stable.
It can be realized that the sweet cherry trees blossom and set fruit naturally in warm and wet areas with an average annual temperature of 16.5°C, by selecting suitable sweet cherry cultivars and their efficient cultivation techniques.
They also produced good quality fruit, with good appearance, high storability, and high economic yield.
