Abstract
The effect, stage and goal, method and fundamental research for breeding of sweet cherry in Zhejiang province are presented in this review, for future reference and breeding in areas with similar climate.
The biggest obstacle for developing sweet cherry in Zhejiang province is the inability to obtain high and stable yield due to the unsuitable climate based on the annual average temperature and precipitation.
Obtaining economic yield cultivars is the short-term goal.
The mid-term stage is cultivars with high yield and quality, and the long-term goal is obtaining cultivars with high yield, quality and excellent comprehensive characteristics.
Research progress made for achieving the short-term goal is as follows: 1) The efficiency of inter and intra-specific hybridization was tested. 2) An in vitro technique of embryo rescue was developed. 3) Several cultivars were selected from the introduced cultivars. 4) Two cultivars selected by cross-breeding were identified.
Based on these modifications and strategies, the proposed ideas for breeding in areas with similar climate as Zhejiang include introduction method combined with cross-breeding, using easily obtained progeny material as the cross parent, in vitro technique of embryo rescue, mix pollen or open pollination, and avoid selecting late maturing cultivars.
