Abstract
To understand the effect of fruit quantity on tree growth and 15N uptake, allocation, and utilization in sweet cherry, seven-year-old field cherry trees (Prunus avium L. ‘Hongdeng’/‘Gisela5’) were subjected to elimination of young fruits at different rates.
The results showed that new shoots, leaf area, photosynthetic rate and growth hormone increased and ABA decreased with increased fruit thinning.
Growth hormone promoted the growth of new shoots and leaves and delayed leaf senescence.
The isotopic tracer method revealed that the percentage of N derived from fertilizer (Ndff%) of aboveground organs increased greatly after eliminating young fruits compared to the control, and the values of the intermediate and high thinning treatments were 3.1 and 2.6 times that of the control, respectively. 15N uptake and utilization increased with increasing fruit thinning.
The 15N uptake amount and utilization rate of the control and intermediate and high fruit thinning treatments were 0.32, 0.60, 0.78 g, and 3.2, 5.92, 7.82%, respectively.
The 15N allocation rate (36.61%) of the high thinning treatment was higher than those of the intermediate thinning (34.38%) and control (16.18%) treatments.
