Abstract
Sweet cherry is the earliest ripening fruit among deciduous fruit trees in northern China and is known as “the first fruit of spring”. It is popular among consumers because of its early maturity, beautiful appearance and good quality.
At present, China has planted 233,300 ha of sweet cherries with a yield of 1.7 million t, and both the planting area and yield are the highest in the world.
China is also the largest sweet cherry-importing country in the world.
In 2019, the import volume exceeded 190,000 t, and the import amount exceeded 1.3 billion US dollars.
As the birthplace of sweet cherry planting in China, Shandong Province accounts for almost half of the country’s planting area and yield.
In 2020, the cultivated area of Shandong Province reached 100,000 ha, with a yield of 800,000 t, which exceeds half of the total area and yield of China.
The sweet cherry planting area of the facility elevated thermal insulation greenhouse has exceeded 67,000 ha, which is the largest province in China where the facility facilitated the cultivation of sweet cherry.
Currently, Shandong Province is a sweet cherry-producing area with the most abundant sweet cherry cultivar resources, the largest area and the largest yield in China.
As a characteristic fruit tree species, sweet cherry has a high price and remarkable economic benefits, and farmers around the world are competing for development.
In the face of increasing competition, good fruit quality is the most important aspect to determine the competitiveness of Shandong sweet cherry in the future.
To cope with this situation, with the support of the state, Shandong implemented its own sweet cherry breeding plan, increased scientific and technological innovation, and improved the core competitiveness of Shandong sweet cherry.
