Abstract
Sweet cherries (Prunus avium L. ‘JiMei’) were fumigated with 0, 25, 50, 100, and 200 μmol L-1 methyl jasmonate (MeJA) for 24 h to investigate the effects on quality and antioxidant activity during shelf life.
From the research, we could conclude that the treatment of MeJA markedly reduced decay and weight loss.
Compared to control fruits, the weight loss and decay incidence of fruits treated with 50 μmol L-1 MeJA dropped by 69.00 and 70.00%, respectively.
MeJA also inhibited reduction in firmness and levels of total soluble solids, thus maintaining better fruit quality.
In addition, MeJA-treatment significantly enhanced the activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase and ascorbate peroxidase and reduced the polyphenol oxidase and peroxidase activities compared with that in control fruits during the shelf life.
MeJA treatment significantly reduced the Malondialdehyde (MDA) content of the fruits, MDA content in cherry fruits treated with 25, 50, 100, and 200 μmol L-1 MeJA was 107.23, 58.56, 97.03, and 77.95% of the control on the 13th day, respectively.
In summary, MeJA treatment has important application value in preserving sweet cherries after harvest and 50 μmol L-1 MeJA is considered the optimum concentration.
