A high density fan training method for sweet cherry

Abstract
We designed a 2-dimension sweet cherry training method that every branch of each tree was fixed to trellis.
Each tree maintained 8 to 10 up-direction branches forming a fan shape.
In which the lower parts of branches were fixed on trellis at different angels as fan ribs, while the upper parts of the branches were evenly spaced and grew upright looking like UFO. Fruiting units were mostly spurs or short shoots along each branch.
The whole 2-D trellis canopy was inclined to the ground with an about 70-90° angel.
Compared to UFO, the fan training method provides more stable tree structure, better balanced branches, better vigorous control, and better trunk support.
This fan trellis canopy could also be trained into the shape of ‘V’ or ‘Y’ canopy etc.
In Chengcheng county, Shaanxi province, fan trellis training was tested using sweet cherry cultivar ‘Summit’ grafted on Gisela 6 and Jingchun 2, on which the performance was promising.
