Abstract
Like many other species of the Rosacea family, the strawberry, Fragaria, is popular and both privately and commercially cultivated worldwide mainly for their tasty fruits.
Due to occurring globally in different habitats, varying from beaches of the pacific coast to mountains up to 4000 m, distinctive Fragaria species with unique traits evolved.
Numerous of these species and their accessions were collected over many years and included in the “Professor Staudt Collection”, the largest living plant collection of wild Fragaria species in Europe.
The collection is maintained at Hansabred GmbH & Co.
KG in Dresden, Germany, and used mainly for breeding purposes, plant research, and preservation causes.
The collection consists of about, depending on the current taxonomy, 24 Fragaria species with more than 900 accessions collected from various places across the world and 74 artificial interspecific hybrids.
Additionally, 26 accessions of the closely related genera Potentilla, Duchesnea, Sanguisorba and Alchemilla are part of the collection. Fragaria moschata with 182 accessions and Fragaria viridis with more than 101 accessions are in the focus of the collection and represent the largest collection of each species worldwide.
This large diversity allows detailed studies for the two species.
The phenotypic diversity of flowers and fruits throughout the collection was documented through photographs taken of each accession.
Three photos per plant were taken to allow the comparison to the respective plant, the visibility of details, and an estimation of colour and size.
The photos of the fruit were edited with the help of a colour standard to counteract a blue or grey tint within the photo and display the correct colours, while the pictures of the flowers remained as they were.
Most of the fruit photos were able to be edited, allowing the colours to be presented correctly now.
However, the method has its limits as very blue tinted photos cannot be fixed.
Due to not all accessions growing inflorescences and thus not bearing fruit in the season of the documentation, some accessions are still missing and need to be documented during the next season.
Despite this, 715 accessions of the “Professor Staudt Collection” could be photographed and impressively show the diversity in the genus.
