Abstract
Since the 1980s, Jiangsu Province has been engaged in large-scale commercial strawberry cultivation, and after 40 years of development, it has become one of the main production areas for high-quality strawberries in China.
According to relevant statistics, in 2022 the total production and planting all over Jiangsu was 580,000 t and 20,667 ha, ranking first in the country in terms of cultivation area.
There are several production types, including single plastic tunnels, multi-span plastic tunnels, solar greenhouses, glass greenhouses, and open fields.
The main cultivation type is single plastic tunnels, accounting for 81.4%. The main cultivated cultivars are ‘Benihoppe’, ‘Ningyu’, ‘Akihime’, and ‘Miaoxiang 3’. Planting and seedling cultivation are mainly carried out in the open field by berry farmers, and there are not many commercial seedling cultivation enterprises.
The biggest problem in strawberry seedling cultivation is the prevention and control of anthracnose disease, and the cost of prevention and control is high.
The shortage of labor force and aging problem are becoming increasingly prominent.
Jiangsu began the breeding of new strawberry cultivars in the 1950s, and has developed 32 new strawberry cultivars, such as ‘Ningyu’, ‘Jinling Lifeng’ (‘Yanmei No.1’), ‘Jinling Hong’, ‘Zijin Xiangxue’, ‘Zijin Shuoyan’, ‘Zijin Fangyu’, etc.
Among them, the extremely early maturing and high-yielding cultivar ‘Ningyu’ has been widely applied.
There is the National Strawberry Germplasm in Jiangsu, which currently preserves 23 strawberry species and over 1100 collections.
We have developed techniques to overcome some production problems, such as using solar energy, biomass, and water to treat soil, which can effectively solve cropping obstacles, rain shelter seedling cultivation to prevent and control anthracnose, and high ridge cultivation models to reduce labor intensity.
