Abstract
The development of strawberry cultivars is one of the most important breeding tasks for the company PLANASA. PLANASA is a globally operating breeding company that, in addition to strawberries, also works with raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, and other crops such as asparagus, cherries, and avocados.
A well-connected system of breeding and test stations takes into account various climatic conditions, market demands, and development opportunities.
For strawberries, these stations are located in Huelva, Spain; Jacona, Mexico; Watsonville, California, and Dresden, Germany.
An additional station located in Le Barp, France is dedicated to cultivars/clone selections & cultivation system experiments and there is a test plot in Marocco (Kenitra). PLANASA has built an extensive network for strawberry breeding, consisting of its own research capacities and international collaborations with universities, as well as public and private research institutions.
The increasing importance of germplasm is duly recognized.
The significant species collection of Professor Staudt is associated with PLANASA and serves as the basis for breeding efforts aimed at improving resistance and aroma, for example.
Challenges in strawberry breeding, such as resistance to powdery mildew, Fusarium, Macrophomina, and Neopestalotiopsis, along with salt tolerance, everbearing performance, improved aroma profiles, and shelf life extension, receive essential input from this collection that cannot be derived from the genetic background of existing cultivars.
A well-structured testing system for various selection stages on the path to new cultivars complements the breeding work and ensures the successful introduction of new cultivars to the market.
Cultivars like ‘Candonga’, ‘Sayulita’, ‘Red Sayra’, ‘Red Samantha’, ‘Red Oryzaba’, ‘Red Makalu’, and ‘Rendezvous’ are products of this breeding effort.
