Abstract
Strawberries are renowned for their rich nutritional profile, particularly their antioxidant compounds, which provide numerous health benefits, including anti-inflammatory and cardioprotective effects.
Conducted over two years (2022-2023) in an experimental field in Agugliano (AN), Italy, we tested the nutritional quality of fruits from 130 strawberry genotypes, including Fragaria virginiana (FVG), Fragaria vesca unifera (FV), and Fragaria × ananassa (with registered cultivars), which were used as controls, along with selections from the UNIVPM breeding program.
Our aim was to select the most effective plants in terms of fruit antioxidant capacity (TAC), polyphenol content (TPH) and anthocyanins (ACY). Among the 130 tested genotypes, we selected the best 40 for each analysed parameter, and then the selections with the values above the average.
TAC was measured using the TEAC (trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity) method and expressed in mM Trolox Eq 100 g‑1 fruit.
TPH was quantified using the Folin-Ciocalteu method and expressed in mg gallic acid 100 g‑1 fruit, while ACY was determined with the pH differential method and expressed in mg pelargonidin 100 g‑1 fruit.
Preliminary results indicate that meteorological conditions, regardless of the environment, slightly influence the nutraceutical values of both cultivars and selections across the genotypes.
Although the meteorological variables, ten selections demonstrated to have above the average value TAC and TPH, while two selections exhibited the highest values of TAC, TPH and ACY.
