Abstract
Strawberries are a worldwide crop of major economic importance but potentially the crop can suffer from at least 65 infectious diseases.
This raises major challenges for growers.
This frequent use of fungicides often carries high economic cost and also amplifies the risk of developing fungicide resistance and negatively impacting the environment.
Can high quality yields with reduced costs, reduced numbers of residues and reduced environmental impacts be achieved? Plant pathologists have many strategies and tools available to use to control these diseases and if these tools are integrated together, most of the diseases can be satisfactorily avoided or controlled.
Tools available to growers include disease avoidance e.g., not planting in soil, use of resistant cultivars, healthy planting material delivered via national/international regulation and certification schemes, enhanced resilience against SPM achieved by using bio-available silicon and the use of decision support systems to control SPM with fewer fungicide sprays.
Such tools enable growers to achieve high quality yields with reduced costs and reduced environmental impacts whilst delivering healthy strawberries to consumers.
This paper will use the UK as an example and demonstrate that the number and severity of infectious diseases can be greatly reduced when there is a holistic approach to disease control.
