Abstract
Breeding in plants is of great importance due to the population increase in the world in recent years, the urban transformation of agricultural areas and the climate changes caused by the decrease in our natural resources day by day.
For this purpose, it is essential to develop new plant varieties with high tolerance to biotic and abiotic stress factors.
Breeding studies on strawberry breeding, which is one of the most produced berry species among the berries in our country as well as in the world, have been carried out in our country for many years.
When the breeding studies carried out in our country are evaluated, classical crossbreeding breeding studies have gained more intensity, but in recent years, modern breeding methods have started to be used thanks to the advantages provided by biotechnology.
As a matter of fact, while studies on obtaining new cultivars with classical breeding methods take 8-10 years, this period decreases with biotechnological approaches.
In this study, classical breeding and modern breeding studies carried out in our country in strawberry are summarized.
