Abstract
The Qinba Mountain Region refers to the combination of the Qinling Mountain area and the Bashan Mountain area located in central China.
There are many mountains and rivers there with a mild climate.
In order to investigate the species, distribution, habitat and utilization of wild strawberry resources in the Qinba Mountain Region, two investigations were carried out in the Qinba Mountain Region involved in Sichuan, Gansu and Shaanxi provinces in 2016 and 2023. A total of 95 wild strawberry accessions were collected.
The taxonomic characteristics of these resources were observed and described in detail, and three Fragaria species were identified, including F. pentaphylla Lozinsk., F. nilgerrensis Schlechtendal ex J. Gay and F. chinensis Losinsk.
It was found that there were white, red and pink fruit types in F. pentaphylla, and red and white fruit types in F. chinensis. The white-fruited type was dominant in F. pentaphylla, however, the red-fruited type was dominant in F. chinensis. Plants of F. pentaphylla often grow together with those of F. nilgerrensis and F. chinensis. Many local villagers and tourists picked F. pentaphylla fruits for eating or making pancakes and wine.
The investigation found that white-fruited type of F. pentaphylla began to be used for cultivation, which created a precedent for wild strawberries from harvesting in situ to commercial cultivation in China.
The habitat of wild strawberries was getting destroyed, and the distribution area of F. nilgerrensis and F. chinensis gradually decreased due to the intensive exploitation and application of F. pentaphylla. In this paper, the reasonable suggestions were put forward for protection and utilization of the excellent wild strawberry resources in the Qinba Mountain Region.
