Abstract
Strawberry fruits are used not only for fresh consumption but also for processing.
China is the largest producer of strawberries in the world, with some open-field cultivations dedicated to processing.
As open-field cultivar, ‘Chandler’ is cultivated in certain southern regions of China, while ‘Honeoye’ is primarily cultivated in the northern regions, including Shandong province, the largest strawberry producing province.
These cultivars have been grown for many years, and there is a demand for new cultivars.
In this report, ‘Chandler’ and ‘Honeoye’ were crossed to breed a processing cultivar for open-field cultivation in Shandong province in 2010, and ‘Amei No. 1’ was selected for six years. ‘Amei 1’ has more crowns compared to its parents, ‘Chandler’ and ‘Honeoye’. In a cultivation test conducted in 2016, ‘Amei 1’ showed significantly higher yields than its parents.
In a production test conducted in 2016, it achieved a yield of 30.2 t ha‑1, representing a 42% increase compared to the control cultivar, ‘Honeoye’. Furthermore, in a production test conducted in 2023, ‘Amei 1’ recorded a yield of 46.6 t ha‑1. Regarding fruit quality, the Brix level of ‘Amei 1’ was comparable to its parents, and the firmness was similar to the control.
According to sensory evaluations, the strawberry jam made from ‘Amei 1’ had a brighter red compared to its parents, and its aroma score was significantly higher than the control.
These results suggest that ‘Amei 1’ can enhance the profitability of open-field fruit production and contribute to high-quality jam processing.
Currently, ‘Amei 1’ is being grown in Shandong province as an open-field cultivar, and its fruits are frozen and exported to Japan.
