Abstract
Shennongjia Forest Region, one of the world natural heritage sites, has been a very mysterious primeval forest area, especially with the enigmatic legend of “discovering wild people in Shennongjia” for a long time, located at the 31° north latitude in northwest Hubei Province in central China.
The area is rich in many rare plant and animal resources.
Shennongjia Forest Region is also rich in wild strawberry resources, but it has not been professionally explored for a long time.
In order to clarify the species and status of wild strawberry resources in this area, Shenyang Agricultural University participated in the wild strawberry resources exploratory team organized by the Strawberry Branch of the Chinese Society for Horticultural Science around Shennongjia Forest Region and its surrounding areas in June 2021 and June 2023, respectively, and a total of 174 wild strawberry resources were collected.
The taxonomic characteristics of these resources were observed, and two Fragaria species, F. nilgerrensis Schlechtendal ex J. Gay and F. chinensis Losinsk., were identified.
It was found that F. nilgerrensis was the dominant species, and the other species F. chinensis was often mixed to grow in situ together with F. nilgerrensis. In Songbai Town and Muyu Town of Shennongjia Forest Region, and its surrounding areas, such as Fobao Mountain in Lichuan City, some resources of F. nilgerrensis with white, large and sweet fruit with strong peach aroma were found, and their fruits were picked by local residents for fresh consumption.
At present, the habitat of wild strawberries is being greatly destroyed, and the area of natural distribution is being rapidly decreased.
It is suggested that the protection measures should be implemented as soon as possible.
