Introduction and cultivation of three strawberry cultivars in solar greenhouse for pick-your-own in Fushun City, northeastern China

Abstract
In order to select the strawberry cultivars suitable for solar greenhouse cultivation for pick-your-own in Fushun City, the three cultivars, ‘Kaorino’, ‘White Snow Princess’ and ‘Taoji’, were introduced from Shenyang Agricultural University, taking the main cultivar ‘Benihoppe’ as the control.
The growth, mature period, fruit quality, yield and other traits were investigated.
The results showed that ‘Kaorino’ was extremely early-maturing, 15 days earlier than ‘Benihoppe’, with rich aroma, excellent quality, and strong disease resistance, especially stronger resistance to anthracnose than ‘Benihoppe’. It got a good benefit for its early harvest, and could be further popularized in greenhouse cultivation. ‘White Snow Princess’ was a rare cultivar for its white fruit with an acceptable fruit quality.
It was especially suitable for sightseeing and picking, and might be used as an attractive supplementary cultivar. ‘Taoji’ had an excellent fruit quality with a very strong peach aroma.
It was robust, had strong disease resistance, and was very suitable for pick-your-own.
However, it matured very late, 28 days later than ‘Benihoppe’. It should be harvested considerably earlier for its soft fruit.
It could be used as an excellent late-maturing cultivar to extend fruit supply.
In summary, the three cultivars of early-maturing ‘Kaorino’, white-fruited ‘White Snow Princess’ and strong aromatic ‘Taoji’ had their own distinguishing features, which offered various and excellent cultivars grown in solar greenhouse for pick-your-own in Fushun City.
